Land Ho! It seems everywhere you look in Carr Inlet there is a bridge and/or a bay and/or an island! SO MUCH to easily explore in one of our kayaks or SUPs in such a condensed area! (see all the best kept secrets in a day or opt for a week rental and be treasurrrre huntin' me maties!) As the arm of water between the Key & Gig Harbor peninsulas, Carr Inlet is filled with parks, coves, seals, Blue Herins, porpoises, and maybe even a deer or geoduck- it never ends! Less yacht traffic makes for calmer seas and happier kayakers and paddleboarders too.

RAFT ISLAND is the area I've lived most of my life and Deadmans was just a 10 min easy paddle away. (On the lowest tides of the year I could actually WALK there, as the water disappears from under the bridge almost daily)! EPIC KAYAKING & PADDLEBOARDING awaits in every direction! Circumnavigate this quaint, private island in just a half hour or just putt along and really soak in the extremely diverse types of homes and landscapes it offers! Just next door to the island is historic ISLAND VIEW MARKET where u can get off on the dock and secure thine bounty for the rest of your tour! If the tide is not too low, make sure you paddle under the little bridge next to the store where it feels a little like Narnia! While circumnavigating the island, visit all the many small coves, bays and inlets you can easily paddle in and out of! Lay Wildrose Preserve is located at the end of one of them and it actually abuts Rosedale St, which landlubbers use to travel by car straight to Downtown Gig Harbor!
HORSEHEAD BAY is actually where I grew up until middle school. It was mostly just tiny beach cabins back then but the wonderfully sheltered scenery is STILL perfect for kayaking and paddleboarding (SUP)! The unique mouth of the bay is comprised of a giant, privately-owned, gorgeous sand bar on one side, and awe-inspiring McMansions tucked in high and low along the shoreline on the other. The bay goes back pretty far, but ideally you just need to paddle a little ways in and just float and observe 360 degrees. "Just the tip" applies perfectly here! (but PLEASE do not disembark your kayak or paddelboard on the sand bar, as it be someone's properrrrty)
KOPACHUCK ST PARK is one of the best parks in the state and because its shore is directly across from Deadmans island, it's just a short kayak or paddleboard ride back and forth! Start hiking straight from the beach, twisting and turning along mind-blowing trails that cut through a diverse PNW landscape of green hues and MASSIVE Maple Trees. Don't forget to be present and just sit on the shoreline as well and simply stare at the 180 degree breathtaking views of Carr Inlet and its Olympic Mountains backdrop.
